What I need help with
My background as an entrepreneur
My current challenges
I'm just at ideation. I'd like to understand how to do market research on competitive products. I'd like to learn about how the app building process works. For example - is there and expert at the technology part that I could work with to build the product? How to i go about establishing a beta test group?
Actions I’ve taken so far
I've looked into the App Store to see if I can find any competitive products. and I'm reviewing the current 'big box' offerings again - as it's been a couple years since I've seen what out there and what they offer.
My future goals
To offer a product that fills a current (perceived) gap in the marketplace - all people should have the opportunity to develop themselves, not just those that work for big companies that have $$ to spend. Also to have a form of recurring revenue to supplement my new consulting business, I'd like to be able to have a product to market in 18 months or so. Doing this while maintain a part-time work schedule as I currently have two young kids at home. I anticipate if the app is a success, that a larger enterprise may be interested in 'buying it's competition' at some point in the future.
My motivations to work with a mentor
I have no experience in app development or developing a software-type of product. I'd like to understand if this is even a viable venture for where I currently am in my personal and professional life.
About my venture
Learn. Do. Be.
An in-expensive app that caters to small businesses, individuals and non-profits that makes development planning simple, engaging and fun - and actually leads to the desired behavior change - unlike the big, expensive and clunky systems and processes that many large corporations use today (like Success Factors and Workday). Built off a framework of Learn. Do. Be. LEARN what it is that you can do differently in order to achieve your defined picture of success. Learn and get stronger at it by DOing it, practicing, stumbling, getting feedback, course correcting, etc. And finally, BE it. Through your persistence and practice you have now built a habit.
